It is outrageous that the League of Women Voters' lawyer would argue that they have a constitutional right to lie when engaged in a legal process. Right at the beginning of the referendum I was told by one petition gatherer that the parkland would be "backyards for the condos." I pointed to the map in his package as proof that his characterization was wrong. Five days later, I saw the same guy in Montclair, but this time he had no map with him. One friend said the petitioners told him the vote would be held last November (which was impossible, and they knew it), and another relayed that the petitioner gatherers claimed the petition wasn't binding and so would not stop the project, but just send a message to the Council.

These people hoodwinked Oaklanders, running a duplicitous petition drive aided by paid, out-of-town, signature gatherers. So much for the LWV's committment to "educate voters"! The LWV and the Oakland Heritage Alliance should be ashamed of themselves.

the whole petition seemed shady. I too was lied to (I live in JLS) and just laughed in their face when pressed to sign.

I hope the thing gets built and the secure some decent businesses for the store-fronts. but after seeing how they do things so poorly in JLS, I'm wary.
